There are many companies who offer First Aid courses, both for work and also private individuals.

St John’s Ambulance: www.sja.org.uk

Probably one of the best-known providers who offer courses for everyone. If you sign up as a volunteer you can get trained for free in exchange for several hrs per month of your time.

Otherwise, basic 1-day (8 hrs) lifesaver course costs £65.00.

British Red Cross: http://www.redcross.org.uk

Another very large and well-known provider both in UK and overseas. Again I believe that volunteers get trained for free.

Practical 1st Aid course 2 days (14 hrs) £135.00

Of course, you can always try and persuade your workplace to organise a course which gives you free training and them another qualifies First Aider.

Please be aware that any first aid course you do, should allow the option of insurance against litigation or someone trying to claim damages. Sadly we live in that sort of world these days.
